Sigma Alpha Gives Back to the Community!
The word philanthropy comes from the Greek, meaning "love for mankind." Modern definitions include the concept of voluntary giving by an individual or group to promote the common good and improve the quality of life. In the United States, the term "philanthropy" is also used to describe the granting of money to nonprofit organizations by organizations and in our case Greek Sororities or Fraternities.
The Alpha Phi chapter participates in many different philanthropy's throughout the year. As a sorority we participate in events ranging from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer walk, Up Til' Dawn, Sigma Phi Epsilons Queen of Hearts week that benefits kids with Aids, Theta Chi's Red Ox Pageant benefiting the Central California Blood Bank, and Derby Days presented by Sigma Chi which donates all profits to the Central California Children's Hospital.
We also put on our own philanthropy each Fall named Bull Run. All profits go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and is typically held during October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
We participate in at least one major philanthropic event each semester. These philanthropies are a great way for not only to raise money for great causes, but to build friendships with members of other Greek Letter organizations and the community!
For many Sigma Alpha's, highschool involved being active in FFA. At Fresno State many actives also volunteer much of their time to the California FFA Association. Every year the State Conference is held right here in Fresno. Many of our sisters speer head committees that are responsible for making sure that the conference runs smoothly. Two of the most memorable events that we volunteered for as a whole was chaparoning the Saturday Night Bash and the Monday Night Dance. The second activity is the Fresno State FFA Field Day; sisters volunteer and help prepare for the annual contests that are held here on our campus.
